Mobilising consumers essential to meet Sustainable Development Goals
Tuesday, 26 July 2016
“The mobilisation of processing industries and end-consumers is essential for sustainable forest management, and ultimately meeting the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030,” emphasised John Hontelez, FSC International Chief Advocacy Officer, at the 23rd FAO Committee on Forestry (COFO) held last week in Rome, Italy.
“The focus of the FAO debate is still predominantly on the supply side. FSC calls upon FAO and its members to integrate the role of the demand side in their strategic work in promoting sustainable management of natural resources. Also, governments can play an important role with their own public procurement policies, and subsidy and tax reforms,” noted Hontelez.
