European Forest Week (EFW) will be held from 9–13 December 2013 in Rovaniemi, Finland. FSC is one of the 15 launching partners who will use the week to promote responsible forest management and raise awareness of forest sector’s contribution to a green economy. The event will be held in parallel with Metsä 2013, the joint session of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) European Forestry Commission.

EFW will be celebrated both in Rovaniemi and throughout Europe with forest-related events organized by different public and private organizations. It will provide a unique communication and outreach opportunity to raise the visibility of the forest sector and the multiple products and services it contributes to the daily lives of Europeans.

The first EFW was organized Italy in 2008. Inspired by the success of that initiative, the theme of this year’s EFW is ‘The role of forests and forest products in a Green Economy’. It is intended to demonstrate and reinforce political commitments to managing Europe’s forests more and more sustainably. Many forest sector stakeholders – from government, industry, private organizations and donors – will gather in Finland, and across Europe EFW event organizers will ensure the participation of both local forest stakeholders and members of the general public who want to learn more and participate.

To celebrate the week, FSC will be carrying out a series of outreach activities to raise awareness of the key messages of EFW. We will also be present in Rovaniemi, hosting a side event entitled ‘FSC certification in Scandinavia: Highlighting the social value of forests.’
