Sustainable fashion is more than a trend: H&M announces FSC® certified raw materials

Thursday, 12 June 2014

Choosing what to wear just got easier! International fashion company H&M has joined other global brands in Canopy’s Fashion Loved by Forest campaign – committing to use fabrics made from tree fibers that come from sustainable sources; thus ensuring they do not originate from endangered or ancient forests.

With this campaign, Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) certified tree-fiber fabrics are poised to enter the fashion industry in a big way - joining H&M in Canopy’s groundbreaking campaign are brands Stella McCartney, Zara-Inditex, EILEEN FISHER, Quiksilver, prAna, lululemon athletica, Loomstate and Patagonia - proving that environmental awareness is in style.

“A campaign like this connects sustainable forest management with the consumer in a way we haven’t seen before. When products are FSC certified it’s a guarantee that they come from well-managed forests, and alongside with large-scale conservation, they help maintain endangered and ancient forests. FSC is the only forest certification system that requires the protection of important nature conservation values, so buying these products that include FSC certified tree-fibers is a good thing for the protection of the world’s forests", remarked FSC Director General, Kim Carstensen.

Tree-fibers from FSC certified forests are made from sustainable and renewable resources. For example, TENCEL® and MONOCEL® are often made of FSC certified eucalyptus and bamboo respectively. A statement released by H&M confirmed that they “will focus on building traceable and sustainable production of the man made fibers in our own supply chain, and in doing so will inspire others in the fashion industry.”

“H&M is a retailer leading the way in environmental responsibility, and we couldn’t be more excited to see them forging ahead with extending the FSC brand to their clothes. Fashion is important in today’s world, and people no longer have to compromise their values in order to look good. We hope that with enough demand from consumers, FSC certified tree-fiber fabrics will soon be everywhere – from the catwalks of Milan to the streets of Tokyo,’ enthused Mr. Carstensen.
