Public Consultation on Controlled Wood Risk Assessments Now Open

Tuesday, 16 January 2018

Consultation
Consultation

All stakeholders are invited to participate in an online consultation on risk assessments for Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Honduras, Hungary, Mexico, Peru, and Slovenia. You can provide feedback until 13 February 2018.

FSC risk assessments are used to determine the risk of an organization obtaining material from unacceptable sources when sourcing controlled wood.

There are five categories of unacceptable material:

·         Category 1 – illegally harvested wood

·         Category 2 – wood harvested in violation of traditional and human rights

·         Category 3 – wood harvested in forests in which high conservation values (HCVs) are threatened by management activities

·         Category 4 – wood harvested in forests being converted to plantations or non-forest use

·         Category 5 – wood from forests in which genetically modified trees are planted.

Currently, risk assessments for controlled wood category 4 are based on legal analysis alone. To fill the resulting information gap, we ask that stakeholders provide information regarding forest conversion data to finalize risk assessments for the countries mentioned above.

Please submit your feedback to Tatjana Stutzkowsky (t.stutzkowsky@fsc.org) by 13 February 2018. Spanish language versions of the risk assessments will be available in addition to the English language versions for the Latin American countries.
