FSC calls on companies to ensure EUTR due diligence for timber imports

Thursday, 22 March 2018

Comment by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) on a recent article published in Mongabay under the headline FSC-certified timber importer failed to check legality of shipment from Cameroon.

The article refers to the recent fine that a Manchester Magistrates Court handed to Hardwood Dimensions, a UK timber importer that currently holds an FSC chain of custody certificate (TT-COC-001776).

None of the timber imported by Hardwood Dimensions was found to be illegal and the ruling by the Manchester Magistrates Court refers to deficiencies with due diligence measures carried out by the company.

FSC certification is a complement to EUTR as a key tool to assess and mitigate risk because it guarantees that the timber is not from an illegal source. However, it is not a substitute of the due diligence requirements under national or supra-national regulations such as the EUTR.

Companies, including FSC certificate holders, are therefore reminded to carry out their due diligence in step with these requirements.
