Denmark becomes the latest country to publish a national forest stewardship standard (NFSS) based on Version 5 of the FSC Principles and Criteria. The standard will be effective from 24 September 2018.

The new standard will replace the one first published in 2004. The most notable change to the new standard is that it makes a distinction between large and small forest operations. Operations with less than 250ha qualify for a simpler audit by an FSC-accredited certification body, helping to reduce the cost of certification for smallholders.

Danish forests

Denmark’s total forest cover is 14.5 per cent, and 75 per cent of the forests are privately owned. There are more than 24.000 forest owners in Denmark, and about 90 per cent of the forests are between 0.5 and 20 ha. Broadleaved trees dominate 41 per cent of Denmark's forest area, 39 percent by coniferous tree species, 11 per cent by a mix of coniferous and broadleaved tree species, 5 per cent are Christmas tree plantations (located inside forest boundaries), and 4 per cent of the forest area is unstocked, e.g., log landings and firebreak areas.

Global status of NFSS development

There are over 80 countries working to transfer their national standards from version 4 of the P&C to version 5. Five countries are in the last stages of finishing the process and are expected to be published by the end of the year. About 40 countries have a standard development group with balanced representation of social, environmental, and economic stakeholders, usually supported by an FSC national or regional office. In the other countries, where there is usually no FSC network presence, standards are being developed by certification bodies, resulting in interim national standards.
