FSC Embraces UN’s Decade on Ecosystem Restoration

Thursday, 14 March 2019

FSC wholeheartedly welcomes the UN’s decision to declare 2021-2030 the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. The coming years will determine whether the world can live up to the commitments made by most governments in the Paris Agreement to combat climate change.

Kim Carstensen, Director General of FSC, said: “This decision can become an important driver of a movement of which FSC will be an active participant.. We have the tools that can accelerate success, particularly in relation to forest ecosystem restoration”.

Ecosystem restoration forms an important part of not only mitigating climate change but also reducing the negative impacts of inevitable change for humans and nature.

FSC’s first objective is to prevent degradation of certified forests, but its standards and procedures can be used to ensure that forest ecosystem restoration projects are managed in an inclusive and environmentally, socially and economically effective manner. FSC-certification of such projects can increase the chances for financial support as well as financial viability.

Moreover, mid 2018, FSC launched a special Ecosystem Services Procedure, which can help foresters to monitor, document and evaluate their efforts to maintain the capacity of their forests to provide ecosystem services such as carbon storage, biodiversity, clean water, and soil fertility and therewith offer practical opportunities for investors in such services.
