SSNC complaint against DNV closed

Tuesday, 30 July 2013

On 10 July 2013, Accreditation Services International (ASI) closed a formal complaint by the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (SSNC) against the Certification Body DNV, for their evaluation of environmental impact in forests managed by Bergvik Skog AB.

ASI evaluated the complaint and found that DNV was not in compliance with relevant FSC requirements, finding two non-conformities. DNV must close the non-conformities by 19 August 2013.

SSNC’s complaint stated that Bergvik Skog did not use adequate environmental assessments to identify woodland key habitats, particularly as related to road building. The incident related to indicators 6.1.7 and 6.2.1 of the Swedish FSC Standard for Forest Certification (FSC-STD-SWE-02-2010).

ASI concluded that opening a forest road with the purpose of logging a forest stand are not separate operations. As parts of one forest management system, they must adequately integrate the assessment of environmental impacts, which ASI concluded DNV did not do to the full extent. ASI issued non-conformities related to this complaint, and due to the way DNV managed the complaint by SSNC.
