US Federal Procurement Recommends FSC Certification

In September 2015, the United States (US) Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued its Recommendations of Specifications, Standards and Ecolabels, which aim to help all federal agencies identify and procure sustainable products and services.
Under these new guidelines, Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) certification is the only EPA-recommended standard for lumber and wood.
“As the largest single buyer of goods and services in the world, the US federal government can drive considerable demand for responsible forest management,” said Corey Brinkema, President of FSC US. “This decision is a big win for the health of our forests, and presents enormous potential for FSC-certified companies.”
The US Department of Energy’s existing recommendation to use FSC-certified products in procurement influenced the EPA to include FSC certification in its own guidelines. While the EPA Recommendations document is still making its way through federal processes, it became effective on 1 October 2015, and specifications for FSC-certified products should begin appearing in Requests for Proposal for federal construction projects in the coming months.
FSC US sent a letter applauding the decision to EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy and Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz.
