Business Must Support Climate Change Mitigation, Says FSC
Monday, 14 December 2015
14 December 2015 (Bonn, Germany) - The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) calls on business to support the global efforts to limit climate change through new initiatives such as those taken by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).
Last week, WBCSD launched its Low Carbon Technology Partnerships Initiative detailing the importance of forests as the most important global carbon sink. At the same time, WBCSD relaunched its Forest Solutions Group, bringing together businesses that will work on these issues in the forest sector. Almost all the members of the WBCSD Forest Solutions Group use FSC’s forest certification scheme as the main tool to ensure they increasingly source material from sustainably managed forests. Sustainably managed forests provide material that humanity needs for many of its products, while maintaining the planet’s carbon stocks and providing other environmental services. In addition, FSC forest certification promotes socially responsible use of forests, respecting customary rights of Indigenous and other local peoples, and ensuring safe and adequate working conditions.
FSC looks forward to working with the WBCSD and its Forest Solution Group members on using forest certification to ensure a lasting contribution to climate change mitigation.
