FSC International celebrates FSC Friday 2013
FSC Friday is FSC’s annual celebration of responsible forestry. This year it took place in over 30 countries on Friday September 27. FSC International joined the celebrations with a series of activities in Bonn, Tokyo and Lima.
The FSC International staff started off their day with a visit to the Waldau FSC certified forest in Bonn, organized with Haus der Natur (Nature House). Here, foresters showed how responsible forest management according to FSC’s Principles Criteria takes place in the city forest. Participants enjoyed several team building activities including learning about the region’s flora and fauna and a blindfolded forest walk.
The festivities continued at Bonn International School, where Outreach and Events Manager Anakarina Pérez Oropeza participated in a seminar on global issues, making a presentation about FSC. The seminar generated a lot of interest form sharp students who were well-versed in the importance of forestry.
FSC Friday concluded with a get-together at the FSC International Secretariat, where participants had the opportunity to learn more about celebrations around the world and hear live testimonials from FSC Spain Director Gonzalo Anguita, Tetra Pak Environmental Communications Manager Ann-Sofie Freijs, and FSC Director General Kim Carstensen.
Celebrations in Peru
FSC Friday was also celebrated in Latin America bringing together designers, architects and construction companies to Lima, Peru. In the context of the event “Building and designing with FSC in Peru and Latin America”, the attendants took part in a workshop focused on green building and attended the largest architecture and design event in the Americas: CASA COR. FSC was featured in the design environment called “Under the tree” where FSC flooring was used and a painting depicting forest motives was especially produced to create awareness around forest management.
Celebrations in Japan
The FSC Japan Business Forum took place in Tokyo, on September 26 till 28, at ITOKI Tokyo Innovation Center SYNQA. The event was attended by over 250 participants from various sectors and allowed for FSC certificate holders to talk about their CSR initiatives and policies and provided a platform for the mutual exchange of information. The opening address was carried out by FSC Japan’s Chairman - Takehiko Ohta – on the positive local impact of certification, reverting to studies on the matter as well as interesting antique Japanese landscape paintings and the contrast of these to the current far-more-dense forest landscapes. On September 27, FSC Japan also hosted its first FSC Friday Party as a means of raising awareness of businesses in their commitment to source certified forest products and the importance thereof.
