TRENITALIA shows its commitment to responsible forest management by choosing FSC certification for its train tickets
This March, Italy’s leading train company, Trenitalia, began printing its train tickets on FSC certified paper. The change is part of the company’s environmental strategy, and is carried out through a special agreement with Postel SpA—the company which supplies the FSC certified paper.
Around 120 million tickets are printed annually by Trenitalia, representing around 360 tons, or nearly two square kilometres of paper. If they were stacked on top of one another these tickets would reach almost three times the height of Mount Everest. Laid side-by-side they would be equivalent to 270 football fields. By weight, this is as heavy as of Trenitalia’s Frecciargento trains! With this much paper involved, FSC certification is crucial to ensuring that the forests which it came from are managed in a way that is environmentally responsible and socially beneficial.
Trenitalia’s new FSC certified railway tickets are evidence of a strong commitment to responsible forest management, and, alongside lower carbon emissions compared to air travel, are one more reason to choose the train.
