Testing Environmental Claims of FSC Certified Products

Wood and Fiber Testing (© FSC A.C.)© FSC A.C.The Forest Stewardship Council and the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service’s Forest Products Laboratory (FPL) have formed a multi-year partnership to test the accuracy of environmental claims being made about forest products from around the world.

“This is a cutting-edge effort to further ensure FSC claims are accurate,” said Kim Carstensen, Director General of FSC. The partnership uses forensic wood science to evaluate supply chain controls and verify the composition of FSC-certified products.

Since 2011, FSC and FPL have been working together to conduct fiber testing on thousands of wood-based products at the FPL Center for Wood Anatomy Research, as well as a satellite lab in Europe. The two organizations are working together to select a wide range of products from throughout the supply chain of FSC-certified materials.

The partnership offers the FPL direct access to FSC-certified materials, and permits FSC to focus on issues of special importance, such as areas of greater risk, supporting Key Accounts by confirming supply chains and testing products submitted by Certification Bodies or Accreditation Services International (ASI).

For 2014 and 2015, the partnership plans to conduct more than 2000 fiber tests per year of wood and wood-based products around the world.
