FSC represented at the 41st International Forestry Students' Symposium in Madrid
On 14 August 2013, FSC was represented at a conference entitled ‘All about Forest Certification’. Organized by the International Forestry Students' Association (IFSA), the event took place in Venturada, a municipality of the Community of Madrid, Spain.
The International Forestry Students' Symposium is the biggest annual IFSA meeting and provides young people with an opportunity to exchange knowledge and share interest in forestry matters. This year's two-week event brought together more than 120 forestry students from all over the world.
Felix Romero, FSC Europe Regional Director, was one of the speakers invited to the symposium to give a presentation about FSC and responsible forest management. This was part of a three-hour discussion on forest certification which took place on 14 August. In it, he emphasized the imperative role of the next generation of forestry professionals in managing the world's forest ecosystems. More than 100 students attended the talk, which prompted a lively exchange of opinions.
Overall, the event highlighted the importance of FSC involvement in two-way discussions with different stakeholders. Hearing others' views first-hand ensures FSC develops policies and standards that integrate various interests in the multiple use of forests.
The IFSA is a non-profitable, non-governmental and non-denominational organization. Over the last 35 years, it has evolved into a global network for students in forest sciences. Its vision is the worldwide cooperation of forestry science students with the aim of increasing the knowledge of forestry processes in order to achieve a sustainable future. The IFSA also represents young people in international forestry policy.
