Organized by FAO–BRACELPA–ICFPA, the event offered participants the opportunity to explore how the forestry sector can propose concrete steps towards a more sustainable future. The panel, composed of experts from different organizations, held an engaging and productive discussion on how forest certification can be a paradigm shift in the green economy.
De Freitas highlighted the need for our certification system to be more focused and to do less – but better. “There are too many demands on certification, from very different parts, and as a result we end up trying to do too much.”
He also said that it is fundamental to manage expectations and be clear on what certification can and cannot deliver. To conclude, he explained that tracking is becoming increasing important, being “the biggest undertaking that FSC has ever made”.
