The Peninsula Hotels operates nine luxury hotels across five countries in Asia and North America. Their daily operations involve over 100 types of paper products, from in-house utilities to printed materials and packaging.
HSH introduced its ambitious policy in recognition of its impact on the world’s forest resources. The policy aims to switch all of the HSH Group’s paper procurement to certified sustainable sources by 2017; currently, 35% of their paper products are already FSC-certified.
“We very much welcome HSH’s paper procurement policy,” said Alistair Monument, the FSC Asia Pacific Regional Director. “HSH has taken a lead in Asia in supporting responsible forest management by specifying FSC. Increasing corporate recognition of FSC certification in Asia is creating strong local demand, which is now an important driver for the growth in the region.”
FSC certification continues to expand rapidly in the Asia Pacific region. In the first half of 2013 over 800 new FSC Chain of Custody certificates were issued, a 13 percent increase. During the same period, 1.5 million hectares of forest were certified according to the FSC standards; in total, 7000 companies in Asia Pacific now have FSC Chain of Custody certification and 10.87 million hectares of forest are now FSC certified in the region.
