ASI Suspends SGS Hong Kong
Certification Body Not Permitted to Issue New FSC Certificates
Effective 26 March 2013, Accreditation Services International (ASI) announced that it has suspended SGS Hong Kong (SGS HK) – a certification body accredited for FSC Chain of Custody certification – in their entire geographic scope, which includes China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam and the Republic of Korea (S. Korea). This suspension is due to SGS HK’s failure to close out major non-conformities with FSC accreditation standards.
This suspension is a tangible sign of FSC's rigor and credibility. FSC is the only forest certification scheme that operates an international accreditation system capable of identifying systemic failures across countries and cultures.
As of the effective date, SGS HK is not permitted to sign new certification contracts, perform initial certification assessments or issue new FSC Chain of Custody certificates until the non-conformities are addressed and ASI lifts the suspension.
SGS HK has issued 2,819 valid FSC certificates, making it the largest in Asia. The suspension will not affect these current certificates provided that SGS HK will address the non-conformities within six months.
This suspension is a clear indication of the high standards FSC expects its accredited certification bodies to meet and the meaningful steps that will be taken when these standards are not upheld.
